How Dermaplaning Works
Precision Exfoliation, Visible Results
Your esthetician uses a single-use sterile surgical scalpel — held at a precise 45-degree angle — and works in short, controlled strokes across the skin’s surface.
The blade removes the stratum corneum (the dead cell layer sitting on top of healthy skin) along with vellus hair. There is no cutting, no scraping, and no discomfort beyond a light brushing sensation.
The entire process takes approximately 30 minutes. No numbing agents, no downtime, no recovery period. You walk out with skin that looks and feels noticeably different — smoother texture, more even tone, and a surface that reflects light instead of scattering it.

Benefits of Professional Dermaplaning
Why Dermaplaning Works
Smoother texture, immediately.
Dead skin buildup creates a rough, uneven surface that no amount of moisturizer can fix. Dermaplaning removes it mechanically, revealing the healthy skin underneath in a single pass.
Better product absorption.
When dead cells and fine hair are cleared away, serums, moisturizers, and active ingredients penetrate deeper and work more effectively. Clients consistently report that their skincare routine performs noticeably better after dermaplaning.
Enhanced makeup application.
Foundation and concealer sit on top of peach fuzz and dead skin, creating that cakey, textured look. After dermaplaning, makeup applies more smoothly and looks more natural — closer to skin than product.
No downtime.
Brightened complexion.
Removing the dull outer layer reveals fresher, more luminous skin underneath. The effect is subtle but immediate, and it compounds with regular sessions.
Safe for most skin types.
Dermaplaning works well for most skin types, including sensitive skin. It is particularly effective for clients dealing with dull, rough, or uneven texture and reduced product absorption.
Dermaplaning + Other Treatments
Better Together
Dermaplaning is powerful on its own, but it becomes even more effective when combined with other treatments. Removing the dead cell layer first allows subsequent treatments to penetrate deeper.
Dermaplaning + Chemical Peel
Dermaplaning + Facial
Adding dermaplaning to the beginning of a corrective facial allows every serum, mask, and active ingredient applied during the treatment to absorb more effectively. Your skin gets more from the facial because nothing is blocking the way.
Dermaplaning + Microneedling
Clearing dead cells and hair before microneedling creates a smoother surface for the device and allows micro-channels to form more uniformly. This can improve collagen stimulation and overall results.
Your Visit
What to Expect During Your Session
1
Before Your Appointment
Arrive with clean skin. Avoid retinoids and strong exfoliating acids for 48 hours prior. No active sunburn.
2
During the Treatment
After a gentle cleanse, your esthetician will stretch the skin taut in small sections and work the blade in precise, short strokes. You will feel a light scratching sensation — most clients describe it as painless. The full treatment takes approximately 30 minutes.
3
After Your Session
Your skin will be slightly more sensitive to sun exposure for 24 to 48 hours. Apply SPF 30 or higher before going outside. Avoid harsh exfoliants, retinoids, and active acids for 24 hours post-treatment. Recommended frequency: every 3 to 4 weeks.
Who Is Dermaplaning For?
Works for Most Skin Types, Including Sensitive Skin
Dermaplaning is particularly effective for clients dealing with:
- Dull, rough, or uneven texture
- Fine lines and surface-level aging concerns
- Dry or flaky skin that doesn’t respond well to chemical exfoliation
- Makeup that never sits smoothly
- Reduced product absorption
Who should skip dermaplaning:
Clients with active acne, cystic breakouts, or inflamed skin conditions should avoid dermaplaning until the skin has calmed. The blade can spread bacteria across active lesions and worsen inflammation. If this describes your current skin, your esthetician will recommend an alternative treatment path — likely starting with a clarifying facial or targeted acne protocol.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Our Dermaplaning
What is dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a professional exfoliation treatment that uses a sterile surgical blade to remove the outermost layer of dead skin cells and vellus hair (peach fuzz) from the face. The result is smoother, brighter skin with improved texture and better product absorption.
Does dermaplaning hurt?
No. Most clients describe the sensation as a light scratching or brushing feeling across the skin. There is no cutting or scraping involved, and no numbing agents are needed. It is one of the most comfortable professional exfoliation treatments available.
Will my hair grow back thicker or darker after dermaplaning?
No. This is one of the most common misconceptions about dermaplaning. Vellus hair is structurally different from terminal hair — it grows back at the same thickness, color, and rate as before the treatment. Dermaplaning does not change the hair follicle or growth pattern.
How often should I get dermaplaning?
Every 3 to 4 weeks is ideal for most clients. This timing aligns with your skin’s natural cell turnover cycle and maintains the smooth, bright results between sessions. Your esthetician will recommend a specific cadence based on your skin type and goals.
How much does dermaplaning cost at YA Skin Studio?
Can I combine dermaplaning with other treatments?
Yes, and we recommend it for many clients. Dermaplaning pairs especially well with chemical peels, corrective facials, and microneedling — removing the dead cell barrier so subsequent treatments penetrate deeper and work more effectively. Your esthetician will suggest specific combinations based on your skin.
Who should not get dermaplaning?
Clients with active acne, cystic breakouts, inflamed rosacea, or open wounds on the face should avoid dermaplaning until the skin has stabilized. The blade can spread bacteria and worsen inflammation. If you are unsure whether dermaplaning is right for your current skin condition, book a consultation and we will recommend the best path forward.
